Using the COWS (computers on wheels) the kids are able to individualize their studies. They can use templates and Google forms to give feedback and work at their own pace. They are able to practice the critically important skill of collaboration, working together and helping one another as they learn to use new tools. One of the projects Mr.P’s class has been working on is a writing project using an online tool called Storybird. These are a few examples of stories in progress (not polished work).
This is John Pastorello’s 5th year at Hadley Elementary, starting as an aide, before moving to a position as a full time teacher. This year Mr. P, a second grade teacher, has also taken on the role of tech coach for his peers. He helps his fellow teachers with many of the day to day questions they have as they begin to learn more about the classroom technology and has conducted after school training as well.
John has been using interactive boards for over three years, and is almost entirely self-taught. He is able to take run of the mill lessons and change them into engaging, interactive lessons to use on the whiteboard. His students use the interactive whiteboards every morning as a check-in, with a different activity every day. This week’s work has ranged from the Oscars to names of dinosaurs, with students beginning to be much more independent. The kids love it! They are now using the boards to learn, are actively engaged and having so much fun while doing it. John uses the boards every day in math.
Mr. P has seen the students grow in independence, and become highly engaged in active learning as they think creatively and immerse themselves in activities that cannot be reproduced with a pencil and paper. These tools are helping them become and stay more organized as they work on their projects.

Mr. P’s second graders as well as his peers appreciate all that he shares as a 21st century teacher and lifelong learner. Thank you John!
